Tonal montage definition9/5/2023 ![]() ![]() What are the 5 methods of montage According to prominent Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein, there are five different types within Soviet Montage Theory: Metric, Rhythmic, Tonal, Overtonal and Intellectual. ![]() Eventually, there also appears to be cuts after their eye lines shift, but even that appears to be more determined by giving equal amounts of frames in each shot. A montage is an assembly of images that relate to each other in some way to create a single work or part of a work of art. There is relatively little movement to create rhythm or determine cuts (although I understand that the pace in the beginning is a slow crawl that matches their stride). I had assumed this was a better example of metric montage, since the duelists are given relatively equal time in their medium shots/close ups, and the emotion is being manipulated by shortening the number of frames in each shot as it reaches the climax. Here's where I got confused: when looking up more recent examples of these types of montage, I came across this scene as an example of rythmic montage. ![]() Rhythmic montage uses the pacing created by the movement in the shot to help determine the cut, or at least the rhythm of those movements overpowers that of the cut (ex: the marching soldiers feet create the rhythm/pacing of the Odessa Staircase scene in Battleship Potemkin). I've been reading about Eisenstein's 5 methods of montage, but cannot figure out the difference between Metric and Rhythmic Montage.Īs I understand it, Metric montage focuses only on the length of shots in frames, ignoring the movement within the shot. Eisenstein used to describe this kind of montage as ‘intellectual montage’: The prospect of a discursive cinema that could lay out arguments and present entire systems of thought fascinated Eisenstein, he envisioned using montage to generate not only emotions but also abstract concepts: ‘From image to emotion, from emotion to thesis. ![]()
